Issues with Excel 2003 after installing WinXP sp3

After I updated my copy of WinXP Pro with sp3, I began experiencing a series
of problems that seem to be related to running Excel, in that they only occur
when Excel is open. These problems include: delayed screen refreshes, slower
performance, occasional system freezes, particularly when trying to copy
information from one spreadsheet to another, etc. In short, the system is
acting like it has a "memory leak". However, using the Task Manager to
monitor active processes and resources doesn't show any problems, and seems
to show everything running normally. Specs of the system are as follows:
CPU: Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz
RAM: 2048 MB
OS: XP Professional, ver 5.1.2600
Excel 2003 ver 11.8211.8202 (SP3)
HD1: 148GB; 121GB available
HD2: 232GB; 232GB available

Any suggestions on the cause and ways to solve the problem? It's getting to
the point where long-term use of Excel is almost impossible, and since I need
to use it on a daily basis to do my job, that presents some problems...

You've checked Event Viewer?
You've updated office?
You've checked your vid driver manufacturer for updated drivers? also your
other hw - NOT from MS update

After all the above, and you find nothing, try running excel through this -

Nothing except for an "Application Hang" when the system finally crashed,
with an error message that provided no guidence.

You've updated office?

All software is completely updated with latest patches/sp's.

You've checked your vid driver manufacturer for updated drivers? also your
other hw - NOT from MS update

Yes - no updates.

I asked HERE because the problems seemed to be related to the WinXP sp3
update, as opposed to a change in Excel. There had been no problems prior to
the update, and installing the update was the only change. Therefore, the
WinXP forum seemed to be the best place to find an answer. If the members of
the forum are too snooty to consider that WinXP might affect software
applications, I guess the MS forums aren't the place to look for answers.

Hadn't run it through dependency walker yet - I'm trying to get approval to
install the software from my network administrator due to security concerns.
Where is it posted on the MS site? (If I can show him that, it will be
easier to convince him to allow the installation.)

Please ignore "Old Duke" or whatever he's calling himself today. He's a
troll who has posted under different names for a long time. He never offers
help but only tells posters they've posted in the wrong place. All of us
ignore him since we figure he's mentally ill and there's nothing we can do
about it. He is certainly not representative of most of the helpers in the
MS newsgroups.
