issues in win/xp

I've been having this problem for over several months now. It's painstaking,
I'm running xp home w/service pack 2. My computer is very slow in responding
to commands when, surfing the net, logging on and off ect... I've tried
everything I know how and even looked in (Kelly's Korner) for answers, but
none seem to work effectively. I install the latest updates and scan weekly
with at least 4 different spyware programs including Microsoft Anti-Spyware.
I get error messages in internet explorer 6.0 (Dyn API reported error in line
375) when I access some websites. Program not responding messages are very
common, especially when logging out of windows. I have to wait 1-2 minuets
for the error message to show up to click (end program) in order to log off.
I've also taken preventive maintenance steps such as:

*run disk cleanup
*run ms config. utility and disable programs I don't want to run at startup
*check disk for bad sectors on the drive
*uninstalled program I don't use or that take up a lot of disk space
*run registry Pro to correct issues in the registry
*updated the BIOS from A02 to A06

I have a Dell Dem. w/256 MB RAM

p.s. How do I clear the NVRM on my system I've been reading about, and will
that have any effect on my systems performance?

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the
Performance Tab. What is the Total, the Commit Charge
and the Peak?

You may check on pagefile (virtual memory) usage with
Page File Monitor for XP:
http://www.dougknox.com/

If you get anything much more than 50 mb virtual memory
usage for most users this means you need to add RAM
memory. The system uses virtual memory for a limited
number of tasks rather than RAM memory.

Make sure you study the readme.txt file carefully to ensure
you get the utility to work as it should.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Report in the System and
Application log over the last 2 days and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Hope this helps.
