Issue with a video driver

I feel like there's something very basic that I completely missed. My hard
drive recently conked, so I have reformatted and reinstalled Windows on a
brand-new drive. No problems - except for the monitor. Windows has the
monitor as a 'default monitor,' at the moment. I downloaded and extracted
new drivers for the monitor (Sony SDM S51) from the Sony site. However, when
I try to update the drivers from the Display control panel, the Properties
box in the Monitor tab is greyed out (as is the Hide Modes This Monitor
Cannot Display, for that matter). I have tried Add New Hardware, and it does
not pull out a monitor. There is no monitor listed in Device Manager. I
searched, and the only topic vaguely similar suggested restarting in safe
mode, but the situation is unchanged in safe mode.

It isn't the monitor for which you want drivers, it is the video card. When
you install an operating system, you then need to install drivers for all
your hardware, including the video card.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

Indeed, it was something terribly silly that I was forgetting. All is well.
Thanks!

May I ask what exactly you did to fix it? Because I am having the same
problem after re-formatting. My video card worked great before...but now its
all weird and actually...my computer is acting like I have two monitors
hooked up and I only have one! And its splitting my desktop, so there is one
half that I cant see. And the performance is so slow its not even funny, I
drag a window around and it re-draws soooo slow.

What did you forget?? What was silly...please ...*LOL*
