If I wanted to stay away from Vista 64 altogether because of DRM issues, will XP
64 be a viable alternative?

There are a lot of DRM capabilities in the Windows XP too, many very
similar to those in Vista.
As to your question about a viable alternative - well no. I you have a
require for the capabilities of Windows Vista then these may not be
available on Windows XP. So the use of Windows XP in place of Windows Vista
a choice that only you can make based on your workload and functional
requirements. It is also worth noting that driver support for the x64
version of Vista is in many way superior to that of Windows XP x64 Edition,
and this gap will only widen over time.
Ultimately the choice of the most appropriate operating system is one only
you can make, but look more closely at the DRM "issues" you think may have
etc and then decide, there is a lot of misinformation and FUD about DRM now
as there was when it was first introduced (actually on Windows ME, but came
to the fore on XP).

Yes, it's a very viable alternative. It's (currently) got better
hardware support even.

Keep in mind it's based on Windows Server 2003 SP1.
