Is Wesley available/ongoing problem with backup

Hi,
I am trying to use windows xp backup utility to backup my entire system
(NTFS) to an external HD but I get the following message when trying to
create the recovery diskette.

"The Files for the Recovery Diskette Could Not Be Created" Error Message
Occurs When You Use Ntbackup for Automated System Recovery

I have installed support tools and at the command prompt typed in ftonline
C: and the following message appears 'online succeeded. That is where I get
stuck, this is what I am asked to do in the ms resolution for this problem,
can anyone talk me through it, I have no idea what a ft disk set is and how
do I find it?

When I have done this, does this mean that I will be able to use the backup
utility in the correct manner?

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem: 1. Use Ftonline.exe to bring the FTDisk sets
online.
2. Back up any data in the FTDisk sets.
3. Delete the FTDisk sets, and then use dynamic volumes to re-create
them.
For additional information about how to use Ftonline.exe to gain access to
Windows NT 4.0 FTDisk sets, click the article number below to view the

The Windows backup utility cannot backup the entire system It is incapable
of accessing files which are in use: thus no matter how many applications you
close, the object of the exercise will be defeated.

To make a full backup of a SYstem DIsk one must use a backup application
that shuts down XP and restarts its own operating system and then access the
folers and files.

Do this with Norton Ghost. It uses Caldera DOS and sussprts external disks
[you will need to select the type of device so that correct drivers are
loaded [USB, SCSI etc]; this is a simple process and one just has to follow
prompts and read the on screen information.

Ghost will create an 'Image File' of the entire Hard drive; generally this
is approx 35-40% of the physical size of the Hard drive as Ghost uses file
compression.

One 'restores' from the image file by using a Ghost bootable floppy disk, so
make sure if your PC is one without a floppy drive, that you have access to a
USB floppy or other appropriate bootable external device.

Hi,

Do you have XP Home or Pro as Home doesn't support ASR.
Also i don't think the FTDisk will really be relevant it seems to be more
for servers.

Who in Hades name is Wesley?! Oh, let me guess, you're labouring under the
notion that this is MS technical support; well let me set you straight on
that. This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup. Whilst MS employees do,
occasionally, pop in here, they do so on their own time and *NOT* as MS
representatives.
