Is this a Vista group, or an XP group?

Hi all -

It seems that more and more of the discussions on this group pertain
to Vista, and not to XP. I've been reading all the posts, hoping to
make improve my use of XP. I have no interest in Vista, and will
change to Vista only AFTER all the XP problems are fixed (if ever!),
and then only when dragged kicking and screaming. If there's a
moderator, how about kicking off any posts, both pro and con,
including the word "Vista", and reserve this group for XP discussions?

Remove the word "make", please - Bob

Although I appreciate the sentiment - it is pretty much a null and void
request.

Although there may be some form of moderation in place - it is far from
complete moderation. No one is going to 'remove' the Windows Vista posts
because they are not Windows XP questions. This has happened for years on
these newsgroups. Questions being asked in the 'incorrect' newsgroup merely
because people don't know any better.

Also - if you are waiting for all the problems to be fixed in ANY OS - you
will die waiting. If that is your only reason to not go to another OS
(because you are waiting for all the problems to be resolved in the OS you
are currently using) - well - that is relatively lame. Operating systems
evolve. You could say the same thing about OS 9 or Redhat 5 or BeOS or a
whole slew of other OSes. When the new version comes out - it isn't long (a
couple of years or so) before the support and problem fixing for the older
OS fades to non-existence. Doesn't mean you cannot continue using it if it
does what you want - but don't expect to go buy that new camera and it work,
or buy that new printer and have drivers. Not to mention that usually -
older versions of OSes are generally hacker targets - as most things about
them (and holes that will never be fixed) are known.

Having said that - yeah - it would be real nice if people would only use the
Vista group for Vista related questions. It would be nice if they stopped
putting their Win9x questions here too. The assortment of posts I would
prefer to never see here again is astounding. Isn't going to happen - not
going to waste my time hoping. I just read a little of everything and if I
see something I don't want to read - I don't.

If you filter out posts from D. Spencer Hines, you'll see a lot less mention
of Vista.

LOL! Very true.

Now if I could only find a way to also filter out posts that quote DSH.

There Will Always Be Grubby Little Censors Among Us -- Even In USENET
Groups.

Folks should simply have the discipline to read what they want to read.

If they choose to hide behind a "Killfile" and just peek out cautiously
occasionally ---- firing off a sniping shot and then duck back behind their
"Killfiles" -- that's fine with me....

In fact I encourage it.

Don't you see what's happening? Search for his posts. They're left at
about 90% unanswered. He's reacting to the fact that no one cares about his
garbage and the majority chooses to ignore him.

At least he's smart enough to figure out he's been added to many kill files.

I actively ENCOURAGE people to use "Killfiles" -- as it cuts down on the Ash
& Trash from their whining, kvetching replies in many groups.

But I have NEVER called for the "Killfiling" of any given individual -- and
I won't be doing so in the future.

And those who discuss the issue with him, me included, so one would
have to filter out many OPs, including a few MVPs, so be wary of
suggesting censorship. It is far easier to just scan the headers
and bypass the stuff you are obviously not interested in, and
simply switch threads if it turns to Vista and you don't like that.
Or, be polite to the Vista debaters, again, I are one, ask any
questions about XP that you want, just don't get any unrealistic
thoughts of a major overhaul of XP. And, thinking people know that
there is no such thing as bug-free software.

Spence, you and I are as guilty as any here. Perhaps we both should
take our discussion to the Vista NGs, EXCEPT for questions or
comments that of necessity must be discussed together with XP.

Let's keep names and name calling out of this. Lack of active
responses has never been a good measure of the validity or lack
thereof of the theses postulated by OPs. Sometimes, people just
don't want to comment or don't know how. Not all, but many people
stay silent unless/until something really rings their bell. And, it
is impossible to determine the number of lurkers reading any of the
threads in this or any Usenet NG.

Very sensible, Jerry.

I'm not a censor. The MS groups are not USENET. Surely you know in the
past I have answered questions you posted -- when you had a question.

But your choice of newsgroups is questionable. vista.general is valid for
discussion of Vista. windowsxp.customize is not.

K

Keith Miller MVP

As I told Spencer, I merely question the choice of newgroups. There are
Vista groups for discussing Vista.
