Is there something very simple wrong here?

Trying to connect 2 Windows XP Pro machines.
One of them (machine 1) has a cable modem connected via a network card.
There is simple connection with a cross-over cable between the 2 machines.
Machine 2 has an internet connection via machine 1.
I ran the normal network wizard, but it doesn't work.
Machine 1 can't machine 2 and vice versa.
I can ping machine 2 from machine 1, but not the other way round.
The internet connection works fine though on both machines.
I have stopped and uninstalled ZoneAlarm, but it made no difference.
Also stopped the Win XP firewall, but made no difference either.

Now I am a complete novice to networks and I have no idea what the fault is
here.

When I run ipconfig I get the following:

Machine 1
------------

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Network Bridge (Network Bridge) 10:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.248.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 82.37.24.1

Machine 2
------------

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : mshome.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.224
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.1

Is there something with these settings?
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re-enable XP's Internet Connection Firewall on Machine 1's Local Area
Connection immediately! You need a firewall to protect your computer
from Internet hackers.

I think that the problem is being caused by the Network Bridge on
Machine 1. It probably contains two network connections, such as an
Ethernet connection and an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) connection. Follow
these steps:

1. Un-share the local area network connection for the cable modem.

2. Right click and delete the Network Bridge.

3. Re-share the local area network connection for the cable modem. If
it asks what to use for the home network, tell it to use the local
area network connection. Don't let it create a new Network Bridge.

Then, reboot Machine 2 and try accessing the Internet again.

Steve,

Thanks for the reply.
I am a complete novice and I am not sure what I have to do precisely.
I have right-clicked the network bridge on machine one and unticked both
local area connection 1 and the 1394 connection.
I then deleted this network bridge.
Now I am not sure what you mean by re-share the local area connection for
the cable modem.
Could you tell me this in simple terms such as right-click this, do that
etc.
The help is greatly appreciated as I have made no progress with this for
days.

To share or un-share the cable modem network connection:

1. Right click the connection.
2. Click Properties.
3. Click Advanced.
4. Check or un-check the box "Allow other network users to connect
through this computer's Internet connection".

Steve,

Ok, so I have the 1394 connection and the local area connection.
What will be the setting in the 1394 connection in the checkbox in Advanced,
Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet
connection?
Checked or un-checked?
If this one is checked I understand the other one in the local area
connection will be un-checked.

You don't use the 1394 (FireWire) connection for connecting your
computers to each other, so right click and disable that connection.

Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the local area connection for
the cable modem. While you have that connection's Advanced tab open,
check the box for Internet Connection Firewall to protect your
computer from Internet hackers.
