Is the new Sys file checker in XP any good?

I used to use sfc al the time in Windows 98. It was invaluable. It
allowed you to restore vital files and dll's from a backup
(individually if necessary)

The SFC in XP seems rubbish. It trawls through at length, constantly
saying it can't find my Win XP disk despite being shown exactly where
it is and then it finished without telling me if it found anything
wrong or not.
