Is NetBIOS required for TCP/IP local network with Win 98 and Win XP?

Howdy!

I am trying to resurrect my LAN after upgrading my main machine to XP
while my other two machines are still 98.

I had been using NetBEUI for file sharing but XP won't do BEUI.

So I used the XP Wizard to setup all three machines for TCP/IP.

And now nobody can see anybody.

The wizard did _not_ enable NetBIOS over IP on any of the machines, XP
or 98.

Do I need to turn on NetBIOS over IP on the '98 machines? ...on the
XP machine?

Grumpily,
Ken

Yes, you need Netbios-over-TCP/IP to network between win98 and XP.

On win9x, if TCP/IP is the only protocol installed, the checkbox to enable
netbios ovet tcp/ip is usually checked and greyed out.

You ought to remove all traces of NetBEUI from all machines, and install
TCP/IP on all machines.
TCP/IP ought to be the only protocol on all the machines.

Now, set up IP addresses.

If you are sharing an Internet connection on the XP box:

1) Enable ICS on the XP machine.
This will force it's LAN IP address to 192.168.0.1

2)Set the win98 boxes to obtain an IP address automatically.
The ICS software on XP will allocate IP addresses.
The addresses will be 192.168.0.x ,where x is between 2 and 254.

If you don't intend to run ICS on the XP box, then set up IP addresses
manually:

XP: 192.168.0.1 mask 255.255.255.0
98#1: 192.168.0.2 mask 255.255.255.0
98#2: 192.168.0.3 mask 255.255.255.0

etc etc.

Either way, now ensure the XP firewall is disabled on the LAN connection.
This is most important.

That should get you going.

Incidentally, you can run NetBEUI on XP, it's just un-supported.
There's a procedure to do it here:

HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows XP
