is my desktop gone??

I was using windows 98 and my computer crashed. I
couldn't find my windows 98 disk so i got windows xp.
when I installed it I lost some files that were on my
desktop. All of my files that were on my hard drives are
still there, but everything that was on my desktop is
lost. I've tried using the find command and I have also
looked through the hard drives for any trace of them but
with no luck. Are my files gone or r they hiding in
someplace I don't know about. Any suggestions would be
much appreciated.
