From a Google search:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Mfc42.dll&btnG=Google+Search

"The mfc42.dll library is required for windows to operate. It provides a
number of classes and code functions that are used in a wide variety of
programs written using the Visual C++ programming language. If mfc42.dll is
unavailable, any software that relies on the functions that it provides will
crash and/or become unstable."

Yes it is and it is a protected system file. Are you having issues
concerning it? If so please post details.

:

Try, from Start | Run, sfc /scannow, click OK. Have the XP installation
CD handy and insert it when requested.
