Is FP possible open Web or Site?

You must first have a web or site open in FP via File Menu | Open Web / Site, then all
content/folders must be created or imported into this open web / site, then you insert
or link to your pages or files. This will ensure that all of your links are relative to
the web / site when you upload the web / site to a remote web host.

I tried to open my Web (still constructing) using FP but I find it is not possible. The
error message: "The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a
password, or the filename contains a / or \." I also tried to open it directly at my
URL or site - the same error message appeared.

I also tried a FREE software "SmartFTP" because it has a provision to input User name
and Password - it smartly connect and open my Web immediately - even its contains a
[ // ] and 3 [ / ].

Suppose I can open it by using FP - can I also open a second Windows for my local
Windows Explorer so I can easily pick some files or folders to upload or even download?

Or please tell me how to use FP to open our Web which require Username and Password or
how to open my site which is ready for the public.

Any input to make us understand is highly appreciated.

A. From FP (copy on local machine):

1. File Menu | Open Web / Site
2. Browser to folder holding your local copy of your web.
3. Click Ok

B. From FP (copy on live/remote server - Must have the FP extensions installed):

1. File Menu | Open Web / Site
2. Enter URL in format of http://www.yourdomain.com.
3. Enter login info, as provided by your web host
4. Click Ok
5. Click Open
6. Contact you host if you can't open, ask them to run a check on the extensions or check the
permissions for your account. They may need to re-install the extensions, since you have use FTP to
upload content.

C. Files to be used in your web must either be created by FP within the current open web or imported
into the current open web after being saved to location outside of the web from other applications.

D. With FP, you always want to use File Menu | Publish Web / Site command to move content between
locations.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for helping me again. Your 'B' instructions still gives me problem: My reply
follow after yours.
B. From FP (copy on live/remote server - Must have the FP extensions installed):
Rino said: Where I can get FP extensions?

1. File Menu | Open Web / Site (ok)
2. Enter URL in format of http://www.yourdomain.com. (I enter in Web Name: _ _ )
3. Enter login info, as provided by your web host (I got my Username & Password but
don't know where {because I could not find} to plug it in?)
4. Click Ok (I could NOT find OK button - only Open button is available)
5. Click Open (yes, the same error message appeared)

6. Contact your host if you can't open, ask them to run a check on the extensions or
check the permissions for your account. They may need to re-install the extensions,
since you have use FTP to upload content. Is it possible to connect and use my
Yahoo.com Briefcase of 110MB Storage then make it as my website?

I would like to hear if someone who tried and make it work. Thanks!

Your host need to have them / install them / support them on your hosted site
Contact them to ask if they do

If you have used FTP, and the host had them installed you have broken them, have the host reinstall them

Thanks Stefan,
I got your point and you really did explained my problem. I think I should stick to FTP
because I'm already used to it - it works more faster and use FP only to create new
pages.

FYI: Then you will not be able to using any of the FP features or functions that required the
extensions, nor will you ever be able to work on the live/remote server directly or if you loose
your local copy, be able publish the live/remote copy back to your local machine with all files and
site structure intact.

Thanks Tom,
Your FYI is welcome and Okay. I found out using FP to manage my site takes more steps
than using FTP program. Everything you mentioned can be done in FTP except one - lost
FP ability to connect to live site. I can accept it and its not a problem now.

But my other question: > I would like to hear if someone ever tried and used Yahoo
Briefcase Storage as their website. Thanks!

My Best Regards!

However FP does a lot more then just upload files during the publishing operation, whereas FTP just
uploads files, so that why FTP is faster.

I can't comment on Yahoo Briefcase Storage, as I only work on Windows Servers that have the FP
extensions.
