A question has come up in the office about linking a music track from a
commercial CD to a powerpoint shown to (1) employees; (2) customers (3)
related independant businesses at a trade show. Powerpoint allows you to
link to the music file. Do you have to have a specific copyright license to
do this?

Yes, you must obtain copyright permission for ANY works used in building a
PowerPoint to show to anyone. PowerPoint presentations are a derivative
work that may include the work of many other people. There is one
exception, for education purposes, but this exception is rather slippery.
Read up on the law before trying to use this exception.

So any music, artwork, videos, font, or text that you did not create must
have the copyright owners permission to be included. Some of these
components are "Public domain", meaning the copyright owner has 1) given
unlimited use to anyone that wants to use it, or 2) where the copyright
holder has been dead for over 70 years.

A few misconceptions about copyright are:
1) Most works posted on the internet are NOT public domain. You still
must get permission to use something snagged from the web.
2) Not for profit organizations are not exempt from copyright laws.
They also need to get permission. Just because you are not going to make
money off of it, does not give you the right to use it.

Your best bet is to look at the copyright laws that are in effect for your
country. Most of them are very similar, but there are some small variations
between countries. Here in the US you can read them on
