I admit it. I was suckered by TigerDirect and Soyo into purchasing
their 99.00 with "rebates" down to 19.99 barebones case, mobo, and
power supply deal.

I will not make that mistake again.

Anyway, I went to put the cpu fan in the thing for testing to see how
it would fit and it is so cramped that after I put the CPU in it the
power supply touches the fan.

I have a good 350w power supply in another system. Is that okay for
2500xp Barton? Can anyone recommend a good motherboard and case?
Thank you.

As has been pointed out numerous times in the past, the actual
power capability of a PSU relative to the manufactorer's label
rating differs widely from mfr to mfr. At face value, a 350W
PSU should be adequate. But it also depends on what other
components you put into your system - gfx card, how many
hard disks..... For the past several months, a 300W PSU
has been powering my kids' 2600+ Barton with a Biostar
M7NCG-400 mobo, an FX5200 gfx card, 512MB, 120GB.

An Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe is a top-notch mobo. If your
display needs are modest and don't need all the bells and
whistles of this mobo, like dual Gigabit LAN, SATA,
Firewire, etc., you could go for the A7N8X-VM with
its onboard GeForce4 MX graphics.

The Biostar M7NCG-400 is similar to the A7N8X-VM,
is cheaper and has more features.

Well even a pile of horse manure has value. How bad can it
be for $20?

It's probably a flimsy case, right? See if you can hammer
it into shape... or grind away at the heatsink some or
whatever, it is only $20 worth of stuff.

Sure, if it's accurately rated @ 350W. Some of them like a
Raidmax 350W are only worth about 200W, which wouldn't be
suitable for more than short-term. If the motherboard uses
12V for CPU (evidenced by the 4-pin 12V connector) then the
PSU should have at least 12A on 12V rail, preferribly 14-16A
or more depending on the other parts in the box. If it uses
5V for CPU, the power supply ought to have at least 180W
3V+5V rating, even more with a power-hungry video card in
the system.

A Barton XP2500 isn't particularly power hungry. It's no
lightweight but relative to a 3.2GHz P4 Prescott it uses
maybe half the power.

It wouldn't be bad for $20. That's why I bought it. But I will never
receive the "rebate." That is why I will not make the mistake again.
That coupled with the shoddy design.

I've already been cautioned about TigerDirect from a friend's
experiences, but others might benefit from your story. How did they
screw you out of the rebate?

Are you sure you wont' get the rebate?
Generally if one makes copies of everything, then gets
denied, it's more a matter of persistence than anything
else. I recall once I got refused a rebate on a camera, 3
times in a row for various different reasons, all
BS/nonsense, so i just faxed it all in over and over till
they finally emailed me to stop, it was approved.

We don't generally have anything in the way of rebates here in the UK and,
when they are offered, they are usually direct from the manufacturer, rather
than the retailer. I recently bought an EOS-10D for which Canon offered a
£200 mail-in rebate and a 512MB compact flash card (which you applied for
via an online form) - I had no problems with obtaining either.
