Is 64-bit Vista supposed to be slower than 32-bit?

Well, I don't drive because of my multiple disabilities, so... :)

I have to ask you if you would run your car on water instead of petrol
because only using 512Mb RAM for Vista will have the same effect. I am

Hmm, I haven't installed anything else beside Windows Vista's programs
and its own drivers (did have to install ATI's Vista drivers to speed up
the display). 32-bit feels much faster and smoother than Vista.

Yes and No.

32-bit os's can emulate 64-bit os/programs. 64-bit os's can emulate 32
bit os's/programs.

If you are running a 64-bit app, it will run best in a 64-bit os. It
will run in some 32-bit os's but you'll be emulating and receiving a
performance hit.

Similarly, if you are running a 32-bit app, it will run best in a
32-bit os. It will run in some 64-bit os's but you'll be emulating and
receiving a performance hit.

Eventually all programs should migrate to 64-bit and the 32-bit os
should be phased out. At that point, the 'old-school' 32-bit people
with old technology will be experiencing the performance hit and 64-bit
will be fastest as the programs will be running natively in 64-bit. Of
course, this is dependant upon industry and software support and how
quick this software/support is developed.

Holy crap! 512MB's RAM is -not- sufficient for running even x86 Vista. I
know because I'm writing this on just such a (x86) system. Can't imagine
that an x64 system is going to run like on 512MB's RAM. Not surprised
that you're seeing a noticible delta between x86 and x64 on a system
with only 512MB RAM.

According to
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/systemrequirements.mspx
....

Windows Vista minimum supported system requirements

Home Basic / Home Premium / Business / Ultimate

* 800 MHz processor and 512 MB of system memory
* 20 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space
* Support for Super VGA graphics
* CD-ROM drive

And also please note that nothing else is installed except ATI's driver
since the default video driver is slower. 32-bit is way smoother even
with Aerial.

They may be minimum requirements for Vista, but they do not take into
account Vista plus other stuff.. minimum requirements for each user will
vary somewhat..

When fully implemented 64 bit multi-core processors become more common, not
just 64 bit memory, and software is written to take full advantage of a 64
bit operating system, processor and memory, things should start to fly. This
will take some time.

Hello,

Well, I've been hearing some rumous that there've beeen a quite a much
problems with the Vista 64-bit with RAM more than 4Gt, Do you have any
experience how they are working, for instance 8Gt with vista? Wondering is it
worth of buying...

Hi,

64-bit works fine with the large amounts of ram. The problems are with
systems that are not designed to accomodate large amounts of ram (like
trying to force 4x2GB sticks into a board that cannot handle more than
4x1GB).

Hi!

I have :

ASUS P5N32 Sli Deluxe motherboard running BIOS 0405
4 GIG of memory
Nvidia 7900 GTX

I install Vista 64-bits Ultimate and everything is slowwwwwwww, very
slowwwwwwwwwwww.
It takes 10 seconds just to display the Control Panel window.
So, Vista 64-bits is not workable at all.

In the BIOS, I change "Memory Map Feature" from "Disabled" to "Enabled".
Now, Vista 64-bits is very very fast and even a lot faster than Vista
32-bits.
And, it takes 0.1 second to display the Control Panel window.

WOW!

Everything works well : softwares and hardwares.

Only Windows Live OneCare antivirus does not run because it does not
support
64-bits.
So, I switched to AVG from Grisoft.

Bonne journée!
