Ipconfig/all Looks ok??? But not really sure...

So here is my problem..sometimes i can get on the internet and sometimes I
can't. There is no reason why.. such as a changed setting or something of
that nature. it just seems to be completly random. Here is what I'm working
with... windows xp sp2, verizon DSL, an ActionTec Wireless router( hoping to
connect my other computer when i resolve this issue). So the times that i
can't get on i get the "page unavailable" and when i look under FILE
Properties it says something like "shdoc.dll dnserror.dll" so like I said
tho...2 minutes later i could go to IE and get connected with having done
nothing!!!When I go look at my network settings all looks good ..says i have
a connection strong signal. When i go look at ipconfig-all it all "seems" to
look ok?? I was wondering tho it does say domain not set?? and under the DNS
server it lists the same ip number as my router?? So can anyone help?? Got
any ideas??
Please Help!!! Thank You in Advance SOOO Much!! ; )

Stephanie,

If your Internet connectivity seems to come and go, and the error is like "page
unavailable", it's probably an MTU issue.

OK, Stephanie,

Let's take a look at "ipconfig /all" then. Preferably from the problem
computer, and from one computer that doesn't have a problem.

And please type your answers after mine - it will benefit both of us. Help us
to help you.

OK, Mouse,

That's from one computer. And you're bottom posting, which means you're trying
- - but your signature, starting with the "-- " line, is still top posted.

Do you see THIS:
--
Thank You !!!!

Many newsreaders, like mine, drop the signature, when making replies (that's a
Usenet standard). The signature is anything starting from the "-- " line. In
your case that is all of your post, because your signature goes up at the top of
your post. Whether or not you bottom post your reply (thank you for that much).
Do you see the problem here?

Quite simply - if you must top post, having a signature makes no sense. And if
you top post your signature, that really makes no sense at all.

So back to your problem. Since the MTU isn't the culprit here, I'm betting that
you have a DNS issue. Is there any host name that you have this problem with,
regularly? See if you can pull up any problem website, using its IP address,
when your problem starts.

Anyway, in the case of your computer, you're using the router (192.168.1.1) as a
DNS relay. And you have the router specified as the primary, and the secondary
DNS. Read here my article about DNS please:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/03/dns-server-settings-on-your-computer.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/03/dns-server-settings-on-your-computer.html

So now I would really like to see an "ipconfig /all" for some other computer,
that's not having this problem. Is this the only computer using 192.168.1.1 for
Internet access?

Chuck, Ok I think I got it right this time!! ;) In regards to the "host
name" "Having problems with" I'm not completly following you there..so
therefore not sure what your asking me. If you mean by
host=www.anywebsite.com then no. I can't acess anyone. Or do you mean by
host= verizon my dsl ? Sorry...

I read the info on DNS. I understand some of it. I think it would help me if
I could see an ipconfig\all example of a pc that is set up for internet with
a ISP provider going thru a router correctly to compare. When I look at mine
it just seems like there should be something about or dealing with my dsl
carrier?? Or maybe not??
What do you mean by DNS relay?

For the moment this is the only computer using the router(wireless)192.168.1.1
I don't have my other computer hooked up to this system yet because I wanted
to resolve this issue first and then hopefully I will have a better
understanding of whats going on and how to do it!! Question...I read that
two computers sharing an internet connection cannot be on the web "surfing"
at the same time. Is that True??
Thanks again you've been Great!!

Hi Mouse,

Give me an example of 2 websites that you can't pull up all of the time, please.

Want an example of "ipconfig /all"?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html

Look at the "Normal" example in the article. That hypothetical example has 2
local DNS servers, 192.168.1.11 and 192.168.1.33, defined. Those DNS servers
then get DNS feeds from an upstream DNS server, for Internet name resolution.
The local servers can provide name resolution for computers on the LAN, and on
the Internet.

Your computer uses your router for its DNS feed. A NAT router, though, won't
work as a server, it just relays the DNS requests from your computer to a DNS
server. So the Internet name resolution is actually provided by your IPSs
servers, relayed thru your router. Your LAN name resolution (if you had a
second computer) would be provided by NBT broadcasts, per this article:
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/address-resolution-on-lan.html

Finally, at least 75% of the people buying NAT routers do that to share an
Internet connection. You absolutely can surf from 2 or more computers, when
they're behind a NAT router. It's when you have 2 computers connected thru a
hub, that only one will get Internet.
