IP/Connection problem

I installed an old network card Linsys Lne100 TX in my WIN2000 SP4 system
and set the network to obtain IP address automatically from a router which
is is suppossed to issue

IP: 192.168.1.1xx
SubNetMask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1

But when I do ipconfig I find the card has
IP: 169.254.164.1
Subnetmask:255.255.0.0

When I try to renew the ip (to force the card to obtain an ip within the
expected
192.168.1.1xx range) I get a message that the ip was automatically assigned
by system and could not be renewed or changed. This is strange and I don't
know where the system is getting the 169.254.164.1 IP from... please help..

it's only a long guess, but check your firewalls. I had that same symptom,
when my firewall was restricting assignment of the IP address. Also check
TCP/IP properties to obtain IP and DNS automatically (I suppose you've done
that, but I had one occasion, when this reset itself, after I switched
between network cards).

That address is generated by the system if it doesn't get
an address from a DHCP server. It looks like your Linksys
is not giving out addresses.

But it is possible it could be a firewall, as Herbert says.

Thank you all for your reply... Fact is I have no firewall installed on this
system. I just reformated the system and the only other thing I have
installed is SP4 from a disk. And yes I set TCP/IP properties to obtain IP
and DNS automatically. But still
gets the wrong ip and subnet mask.

Possible causes:
1. DHCP-server in your router is disabled or IP-pool exhausted
Fix: enable DHCP-server, IP-pool usually 192.168.1.100 ~ 199
2. Wrong network cable, use straight not crosscable.
3. Bad network cable. Check: both LED's at network card should be lit.
4. Bad router port. Try other port, they are all equal.
5. Bad / old network card driver.
6. Bad network card

Hi John
Thanks for all the tips

DHCP server in router is working fine... my other 2 pcs connected to same
router are working fine and are able to obtain IP automatically. Only 2 pcs
are connected to the router so it has not exhauted IP-Pool.

Network cable is fine and works OK on other systems

I have tried other router ports. Even switched to the ports where my other
pcs worked conected OK

Bad/Old network card... Hmmm... The network card is onboard and works well
when I manually assign an IP and connect it to a hub that does not assign
IP. But the card would not work if I connect it to a router. I think the
problem is DHCP client side... Just a guess.

Thanks

Hey Joe,

Sometimes network driver layers can get damaged
(e.g. by removing spyware or virus).
Following programs are safe to run and can't hurt (helped me out too).

1. Run WinSockFix at
.. www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml
.. If not working for you, proceed to step 2.

2. Run LSP-fix at www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Just another wild guess ...
Could there be a router security rule that prevents you from
connecting ?
Like positive MAC-address registration to allow connections.
or negatieve MAC-address registration to lock you out ?

Report back what you got.

Joe,

I forgot to tell.
Try this as well.
Run command (cmd) shell
(getting poetic, lol :)

Type ipconfig /flushdns
and ipconfig /registerdns

Anything resolved?

Hi John

Thanks again... flushed and registered dns. Did IP config but it still shows
the wrong ip. So did not resolve the issue. I will try the other utilities
you suggested.

Thanks

One more thing to try...
Make sure that your DHCP client is running.
Right-click on "My Computer"
Select "Manage"
Select "Services & Applications" -> "Services"
Look in the list of services.
Make sure there is a service labeled "DHCP Client", its Status should
be "Started" and its "Startup Type" should be Automatic.

Thanks John

Yes DHCP client is running. I added another Ethernet card and still had the
same problem. Finally I connected the ISP modem (which normally connects to
the router) straight to the pc using a USB cable and I was able to surf the
net. For all I know this PC is sick somewhere and can't obtain IP
automatically. Actually the pc is an older version Compaq Deskpro...
