IP Adress Nomenclature

I am trying to network a home PC with XP home to a domain work laptop running
XP pro via a crossover cable. The work laptop has a Fixed IP address.

In TCP/IP Properties, what is the difference between the "Obtain an IP
address automatically" selection under the general tab and "Automatic private
IP address" selection under the alternate configuration tab?

Can I select "Obtain IP address automatically" to enable the alternate
configuration tab and enter my fixed IP information under the alternate
configuration?

Thanks for your attention to this matter

Mike,

The first, "Obtain an IP address automatically", gets you ip address, gateway,
and dns settings from a DHCP server. Those settings let you access the
Internet. The second, "Automatic private IP address", allows your computer to
assign itself an ip address (but no other settings), when a DHCP server isn't
available; APIPA gives you ability to only access other APIPA computers on that
same subnet.

You can assign yourself a fixed ip address to be used only when DHCP isn't
available, instead of APIPA. Just remember to provide all the data properly.

Or, if you want to use a fixed address consistently, just deselect "Obtain an IP
address automatically", and enter everything on the first tab. You don't need
an Alternate configuration then, and you won't get one.
