Invalid Filename

E

Eric

I have several files on my system with invalid ascii
characters in there name.

The problem is chkdsk hasn't found any problems with my
drive, and windows will not allow me to delete or re-name
them. For the most part deleting them is my goal, however
there is one file that is a camera pic that I would like
to re-name and hopefully view.

If I try and open any of the files I get the message "The
Filename, Directory Name, or volume label syntax is
incorrect."
If I try and delete them I get the message "Cannot Delete
file : Cannot read from source disk or file"

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi, Eric.

Open a "DOS" window. Then use the Dir command with the /x switch to show
the SFN (Short File Name, also known as the 8.3 filename) in a column before
the LFN. Then use the SFN to rename or delete the file.

TY for the reply RC, a Dir /x shows no SFN for the
offending files however.

Still stumped :(
