Invalid boot.ini file

I am now receiving the following error when I reboot my
computer:

"Invalid boot.ini file"
"Booting from c:\winnt"

Can someone tell me why I am receiving this message?

Earlier this morning almost all of my desktop icons and
all of my quicklaunch icons disappeared, and 99% of my
start programs folders were empty...this is after
receiving "chat error" messages when logged on Yahoo Chat.

Can anyone tell me how to fix these problems??????

Not sure about the chat stuff; when is the last time you
did a system scan for viruses? Anyway... once the
machine boots, look for the hidden system file boot.ini
and see what is in it.
