Interrupts Time Placeholder very high %cpu usage

Once or twice a day my cursor will become catatonic...I will move it and 15
seconds later the little arrow will move. This will go one for five minutes
or so then things will go back to normal. The only clue I have is that I've
noticed (using TaskInfo) that when this happens the Interrupts Time
Placeholder will be using up to 95% of the cpu%.

This may also be related to the 1-3 times a day lock up I'm getting...I'll
be moving the cursor/mouse and either in mid movement or as I start to click
on an icon or menu item...the cursor will freeze in place. I've waited for
an hour and more to see if the computer will unlock but it never happens, I
always have to reboot. Checking the Events log ,after I've rebooted, shows
nothing under either Application or System. I have had this lockup without
the Interrupts Time Placeholder showing high %cpu, but I've only just
started watching this closely.

Any ideas on this problem?

Just after I started this thread my computer locked up again without any
sign of high %cpu usage. I was saving an Excel file and the minute the
cursor turned to an hourglass it locked up. I had to reboot and there is no
sign in the Event log of anything unusual.

So it looks like I have two separate problems, cursor catatonic and computer
locking up. They may be related but I don't know how to prove this at this
point.

Any troubleshooting ideas would be welcome.

Locking up sounds like some hardware malfunction or failure.

Would the hard drives(2) be the most likely culprit(s), or could if be
anything from the IDE controller to the video card to the on board network
card and so on. Should I be disabling these items one at a time...although
I couldn't really disable the IDE controller. It could even be the
motherboard itself...I just installed this Asus P4PE motherboard and many
strange problems have arisen since.

Locking up sounds like some hardware malfunction or failure.

The disk drives may be the easiest to confirm. You can download a disk
diagnostic routine from their web site.

Also try a 'Safe Mode' boot and or diagnostic startup to see if the issue
persists. (msconfig from Windows XP)

Did you clean install after the mobo replacement? If not that's probably the
issue.
