Internet Gateway

I just came across this in my WinXP Pro workstation, and it seems new to me.

When I click on View Network Connections, it shows 2 icons:
-One is Internet Connection under Internet Gateway.
-One is Local Area Connection under LAN or High Speed Internet.

What does the first one do ? How did it get there ? I'm not able to disable it. I don't really need a local networking.

It's an icon that represents your Broadband Internet connection &
hardware. It hurts nothing to leave it in place.
