Internet Explorer Operation Aborted

When I go to log onto a web page I keep getting this
message Internet explorer cant open such and such site
operation aborted does anyone know what is causing this
and how it can be corrected, I already did several virus
scans and some changes to my registry but it keeps
popping up

Not a virus but a parasite.

Rule out parasites.

If the message that pops up is "Internet explorer cannot
open the following Internet site (site name). Operation
aborted.", I was having the same problem (and it was
driving me around the bend!).

The solution for me was to run Spybot (at
http://www.safer-networking.org/ and make sure to get the
updated scan pattern). When I ran it, I removed the
CoolWWWSearch entries it discoved and I was happily
surfing right after.
