Internet Explorer issues

I am using Windows Xp SP2 and Internet Explorer. For some reason my browser
will not load certain links, for example, a link to launch a pdf file is on a
web site, I click the icon and nothing happens. On other sites I click icons
to download software or information, nothing downloads and at the bottom of
the browser it says Done. I have had to start using the Mozilla Firefox
browser and none of this happens. I have reinstalled XP SP2 to no avail. In
fact I tried to post using Ie but the new post icon would not launch the
question dialog box. I would really like to use IE as not every site I use
is compatible with Mozilla Firefox. Any ideas are appreciated, I just don't
know where to start.

Try this and apply to .pdf files as well.

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
[Q303401]
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
The key does not normally exist.

If not only .exe files, try this:
Blank Web Page with Placeholder Icon and You Cannot Save a File to
Disk

Alan,

thanks for the quick reply, I did not see any of the related extension calls
in the plugins section of the registry. Is there any way to completely
uninstall internet explorer and then reinstall it?

Did you see anything at all under the key below?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension
If so, export it for safety and remove it.
Ensure IE is not running at the time.

No, there is no normal way to remove IE from XP.
(I wouldn't consider the abnormal ways that need 3rd part eradicators)
