Internet Explorer failure in XP-Pro (SP2)

The Int Explorer program was working ok. Then we installed about the last 3
months of Win XP updates off the Microsoft site, plus also installed a Bank
program for commicating with our company bank.
Now every time we run the Int Explor prgm or the Bank program its fails
within 10 to 20 seconds of startup.
The failure message with Int Explorer is :
"Eror Signature; AppName = iexplore.exe ver 6.0.2900.2180 ;
ModName=mshtml.dll ver 6.0.2900.2912 ; Offset = 00069415"

When the Bank prog fails its a similar error to the above except
"iexplore.exe" is replaced by the bank prgm name "asbbank.exe"
I am led to beleive by the bank that the bank prgm is similar in
functionality with Int Expl or uses part of it or whatever !!
This Bank prgm runs fine on other PCs within the company.

I have checked for viruses with Trend Micro pgm and used AdAware prgm also.

Cant run the Microsoft Update function any more as it fails as above within
10 seconds of getting into the site. I see now that there are more XP-Pro
updates available but cant get them.

Can anyone point us in the right direction as to what may be wrong here
please ??
Thanks

Try Doing this: You may need the windows installation cd

Start – run – Type or copy/paste: sfc /scannow (press enter)

wait and follow the instruction, restart the computer

Thanks LFR .... that has been a big help.

A point of interest, does the CD need to be kept in the CD drive at time of
power restart ?

This is an issue raised by a recent windows update package. After a
long wait...
A hotfix is now available through Microsoft Product Support (and given
it is a product issue it should be deemed free, but don't quote me).

KB article 926996, Fix numbers 187899 and 187898 for server and client.

I have been told the release via Windows Update will occur as part of a
cumulative update in October.
