I find that IE (v 7) crashes periodically at the most inopportune times and I
get an error message such as:
Event Type: BEX P1: iexplore.exe P2: 7.0.6000.16544 P3 46c2535f
P4: matrix.dll P51.0.0.1 P6: 474391e4 P7: 0002012f
P8: c0000409 P9: 00000000

I am running XP home on a Dell dimension 9135. any suggestions why this
happens and how do I fix it.............Thanks

One post is sufficient.

1. Does this behavior persist if you start IE7 in No Add-ons mode? To start
IE7 in No Add-ons mode:

Right-click on the blue IE desktop icon and select Start without Add-ons; or

Start > (All) Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (No
add-ons).

Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:

2. Does the problem persist if you Reset IE7 Settings (RIES)?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737 <= Read before using!

3. If you uninstall (a) IE7 (which automatically returns you to IE6), (b)
all toolbars and (c) all third-party Windows Themes (including Window
Blinds) and do NOT reinstall IE7, does this behavior persist? If it does,
do NOT reinstall IE7.

[And I strongly recommend using

installation source, not Automatic/Windows Update.]

Make *certain* that you check in at Windows Update immediately after
reinstalling IE7 to install any critical updates offered. If Optional
Updates category offers Root Certificates update, I recommend installing it
to take full advantage of IE7's additional security.

"matrix.dll" does not belong to WinXP. Right click the IE desktop icon >
Start w/o Add-ons or start IExplore.exe with the parameter '-extoff'.
If the problem does not re-appear anymore, disable that Add-on. Check the
file properties of "matrix.dll" in order to identify the crapware that
you've installed and check the system for malware ASAP. See also

I take that back. You've got a Trojan.Advatrix (AKA SpySheriff; Zlob)
infection...and it probably brought other "friends" with it.

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

In searching for matrix.dll I found a strange folder in C:/program
files/winbudget/bin. in bin there are the following files:
crap.1196081031.old
matrix.dat
matrix.dll
matrix.dll.1194439267.old
I have no Idea what this represents but If it's malware IE& ought to
function without this file. I also noticed when deactivating IE add-ons that
this dll file di not have a deactivate option. I renamed the file old
winbudget, but have not reopened IE yet. Am I barking up the wrong tree here?

Well, is matrix.dll etc. needed or not?

No, it was installed by the hijackware.

Seems to apply in this case:

Again, scan your system for malware ASAP. If there are more findings,
you might be better off when reinstalling Windows from scratch. Other-
wise, it may or may not be sufficient to use pertinent spyware removal
tools. Good luck.
