Internet Explorer and all networking is very slow

Since upgrading to sp2, Internet Explorer is very slow.
When I initiate a session and attempt to attach to any
website, the browser just spins. It will take between 5
and 10 minutes before it finally attaches. During this
time, there is no network activity and no disk activity.

Once connected, it seems to work normally, although
sluggishly. By the way, I get the same behavior if I try
to connect to a web site through an Office application
(which I assume uses the same interfaces and thus suffers
from the same problem).

I've started using Firefox, which doesn't suffer from this
problem, but I use some web sites that have IE-specific
dependencies.

Any thoughts?

Huh?

Could you possibly state that using different words.

Okay...

I open IE.
I try to connect to a web site.
Nothing happens.
I wait.
Nothing happens.
After 3-5 minutes, the web site comes up.
Things work normally (although slower) after the initial
web site comes up.
BTW, I am not using a proxy.

If I close IE and try again, the same pattern repeats.

This only happens in IE, or MSOffice applications that
access the Internet.

Clearer?
