internet explorer address bar connection/pulldown extremely slow

hi there,
whenever I manually type an url into the ie address bar
and hit enter it takes about 30 seconds (i.e. an
eternity) until ie connects to the respective site (same
time for first address bar pulldown). I already tried
clearing temp and typedurls (via regedit). what else can
I do?

however ie reacts promptly to links, favorites and the
like. as I just found out reaction is also prompt when I
type e.g. http://www.amazon.com yet not for
www.amazon.com as it used to be.
