Where are you seeing this? Tell us *exactly* what you see. Use the actual
words describing the connections, not your approximation of them. If you
are seeing more than one entry in Local Area Connections, right-click on
each one and see what its Properties are. Include that information in your
post.

ok, here is what I see:
I go to Start>Control Panel> Network and Internet Connections>Network
Connections>here I see that 2 internet connections are enabled> local
internet connection and local internet connection 2> both are
connected..here is what they say :

Local Area Connection
Connected
Globespan Virata USB IAD LAN

Local Area Connection 2
Connected
Intel (R) 82566DC Gigabit Network

So does this help? Should I have both? Or how do I know which is the one
to use?

You have several Local Area Connections because you have several devices
that allow you to make a network connection. One of these devices is a
Globespan Virata USB modem. This is apparently what you are using to get to
the Internet. The Intel entry is for your ethernet network adapter. Leave
these things alone and find something else to worry about. ;-)
