Internet Connection Wizard - can't create LAN connection

In the past, when I've needed to create a internet connection, I would go to
the 'Network and Dial-up connections' dialog --> File --> New Connection
(brings up the Network Connectino Wizard; do 'Next', choose, 'Dial-up the
Internet', 'Next', choose 'I want .... to connect through a local area
network'; 'Next', choose, 'I connect through a local area network', 'Next';
leave 'Automatic discovery of proxy' checked, 'Next', choose 'No' don't want
to create a mail account; 'Next', and finally, 'Finish'. And, the result
would be that I've have a new connection in my 'Network and Dial-up
connections'. But, that doesn't appear to work any longer. There is no new
connectino created after 'Finish' (nor is there any error, and nor does it
prompt me for the name of the connection). When exactly it stopped working,
or what event may have triggered this, I haven't a clue.

So, even though I seem to be able to connect to the internet just fine, I
cannot in fact view or alter the properties of the connection; or disable it,
or anything else, because there's no reference.

Any ideas as to what's happening would be greatly appreciated.

When you go start>settings>network connections what do you see?

If you see "Local area connection (something)" that is the connection likely
to be in use at the moment, why would you need to create another one?

Opening that should give you access to the current properties and from there
you should find a checkbox that allows you to display an icon in the system
tray, once that is done you can use that icon to get to properties.

Unless you have more than one network card or have made some other relevant
changes I don;t see why you would need to keep setting up "new" connections.
Usually the same connection applies even if you move the machine or change
ISPs. Can you explain a bit more?
