Internet Connection Sharing

I have dialup and use a Vista computer set up as the HOST, an XP machine
setup as the client. The client can ping the host & itself. When it tries
to ping www.microsoft.com, it comes back with the IP4 address 207.46.19.254,
then it times out.

I can try tracert www.microsoft.com, it shows the first HOP of the Vista
machine [1 1<ms * <1ms computername.mshome.net 192.168.0.1], then times
out on the rest. The Host machine has no problems with internet.

I have attempted turning off the windows firewall in both the Vista & XP
machines.

the best way would be to configure the xp machine with a static ip

go to the connections right click on the network connection > properties
go to the TCP IP and press properties

give the following
IP 192.168.0.5
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
dns server 192.168.0.1

make sure that both pcs are also on the same workgroup.. in your case mshome

tell me if this helps

That didn't work. When I opened up the IE browser, I can see in the status
bar that it finds my homepage.. but then I get the IE cannot display the
webpage.

Also, both are on "Workgroup" workgroup.

are you sure you are sharring the connection correctly?

can you tell us how you have shared your dial up connection?

B

On the Windows VISTA machine, after assuring that I can connect to the
Internet, I went to the Network and Sharing Center... found the Internet
connection, and clicked on "View Status" From there, I went to properties
and then Sharing.. and enabled all of the options. I then got a new device
in my Network called "Internet Gateway Device".

From the Client Machine, it finds this connection automatically and asks me
if I would like to use it.

I sure would like to get this working.. please anyone? The ICS works with
another Vista machine.. able to share the internet connection. With the XP
machine, it finds it, can ping all the local machines.. both the IP4 & IP6.
When you first open the IE browser, it shows that it finds the website.. but
the signal just won't come thru! HELP!!

That's not a problem, near as I can tell. The same thing happens when
I ping them (except that you left one digit out of the IP address:
207.46.193.254). Many systems just aren't set to respond to a ping
request. If you can connect to the MS web site, then stop worrying.

try disableing the antivirus also..

this is indeed strange.. can you access other files via the network if you
share them??

But that is why I wrote in the first place, I cannot connect to the Internet
with an XP client, and a Vista Host.

Ok, another day.. let me elaborate further.

I have a Windows Vista Ultimate connecting to the internet via Dialup. This
is working as you can see from my posts. I now need to share that connection
so that the other computer(s) on my home network can access the web.

I have shared that connection on the Vista Ultimate machine. From the
Windows XP machine, I can see the connection and set it as the method of
connect for the XP machine. It seems to work, as I can ping the Host & other
clients... however, when I try to ping past the local network, this is where
it stops.

I brought home a Windows Vista Premium laptop & connected it to my home
network... I can still see all the clients, and even the shared connection.
However the Premium cannot access the Web.

From the Network and Sharing Center of the Vista Premium, I see This
Computer ===> Network 2 ===> X ===> Internet. When I click on the X between
Network 2 & Internet, the Network Diagnostic says, "www.microsoft.com" is not
set up to establish a connection on port "World Wide Web service (HTTP)" with
this computer.

From a Command Prompt on the Vista Premium, I can still ping all the
clients. I get an IP6 from all but the XP machine, it gives me an IP4
address.

I have searched & downloaded all that I can, but being on Dialup, this takes
forever.. one update was over 163 MB!

From the Vista Ultimate HOST, I clicked on the Diagnose and repair from the
Network and Sharing Center... it finds NO problems.

Please help!
