Internet connection sharing - Vista and XP

M

mr.hock

I have one computer running Vista connected to the cable modem, and one
computer running XP. The two are connected via a wired network using a hub
(no router). I finally got file and printer sharing to work. On both
computers, under TCP/IPv4, I obtain an IP address automatically on the
general tab and use an alternate configuration with a static IP address. On
the Vista computer, I checked the 'allow' box under ICS. But I still can't
access the internet on the XP.

I think this is the problem: "obtain an IP address automatically on the
general tab and use an alternate configuration with a static IP address".
Post back with the result of ipconfig /all may help.

I have been told that I need to assign an IP address to my home computers
since I have a hub, not a router. This worked until I added the new Vista
computer. But if I just assign IP addresses, I can't access the internet even
on the Vista. I tried the "combination", and it at least allows file and
printer sharing between computers, and internet access on the Vista. Here is
the ipconfig. No telling how bad I've screwed things up. (Can you tell I
don't know what I'm doing?)

Thanks,
John

It sounds like your Vista is the Host on ICS and the XP is the Client. I
would try on the XP machine to go to Start/My Network Places/Network setup
wizard and use that to get your XP machine to use the Vista machine for
Internet sharing. When your done you should be able to run an IPCONFIG /ALL
command and see that your local NIC card has an IP address of 192.168.0.X.
That wizard should make the process simple. I've done this on my soho
network recently quite easily on XP's. Not so easy on Vista.
