internet connection interupted

Situation: there are three computers accessing the internet via Verizon DSL,
there are two modems and an ethernet switch. I don't understand the set-up,
why not use one modem to take care of all the systems? It seems one computer
is using one modem and the others are using the other modem. Does it have to
do with speed and security?

Question: Evrytime time one of the computers, The one in the main office, is
turned off we loose connection to the internet. All systems are restored by
disconnecting the power source to each of the DSL modems
