Internet Browsing problem post SP2 install

I was able to surf on XP SP1 with no problems. Installed SP2 and am not able
to surf either through dialup or network connection. I am able to ping and
renew IP address, but can't surf. Firewall is disabled. I don't have any
other firewall. Restore to pre SP2 and able to surf again. Reinstalled SP2
and can't surf.

Removed spyware using Ad-Aware, SpyBot and Giant. No viruses(have Norton).
Any help will be greatly appreciated

Presuming you can ping your default gateway's IP, your DNS server(s) IP, you
may need this WinsockFix tool. or something similar:

This problem may be more to do with spyware removal than with SP2...but try
it.

You'll never be happy that way.

First thing is to install Service Pack 2 again, so you have an
effective firewall in place.

Then remove all the viruses, worms, and spyware you have
collected. Be careful and use more than one scanner. Unprotected
computers that are connected to the Internet usually collect a
whole zoo of malware within minutes.

If that doesn't fix things already, read
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm or, if you prefer a guided
procedure, use http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm to solve any
remaining problems.

Whoops - don't know how I missed that part! Agreed, 100% - although in the
meantime he could turn on the XP firewall manually in his network
properties. I would avoid installing SP2 until running all the spyware
removal tools so it's a known clean Windows install..

Lanwench,

yes, makes sense. He just has to have the firewall active or
pull the plug.
