Intermittently slow-booting Windows XP

I've just bought a new desktop PC, and I wonder whether Windows Defender -
which I've never experienced before - might be causing me a problem.

I'm using Windows XP Pro SP2, with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor
3800+ 2.1Ghz, with 2gig ram.

Once or twice a day, my normally fast-booting system takes a long time to
get past the Windows XP loading screen (the one with the black background
that appears before the blue "Welcome" screen. Could this be down to Windows
Defender? This might be a very stupid question, but I really haven't
encountered Defender until now.

I would attribute the slowness to some other driver conflict, probably WAY
before Defender is loaded. In the olden days of Win 9x, I would have
suggested that you resequence your drivers. This is not as easily done in
the post-2K era.

If all else is operating smoothly, I wouldn't fret.

Incidentally, I'm a big AMD fan, and an even bigger fan of the 64X2. I own
two and will be adding a couple more before the year is out.
