Intermittent PS/2 Mouse problems with USB Keyboard connected

I just installed a Microsoft Natural 4000 keyboard and now every other time I
start the computer, my PS/2 mouse won't work. I have to restart the
computer, then the mouse will work.

When I installed the new USB keyboard, I inadvertantly installed ALL the
software--including the Microsoft Mouse software and that seemed to be the
start of my problems. Since my mouse isn't a Microsoft mouse, I uninstalled
the Mouse software--but continue to have this problem.

Also, I did not have my PS/2 Keyboard connected at the time I connected the
USB Keyboard (I've heard that can be a cause of some problems).

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to resolve?
Thanks in advance......

Which version from microsoft was installed for 4000.The current one is v6.1
This version installs seperate software than the usual shared with mouse.

It has IntelliType Pro 6.0 (Keyboard) and IntelliPoint 6.0 (Mouse). I can't
remember if I had the option to install just one of them, but they were
installed as 2 seperate programs so I was able to remove the IntelliPoint
program in the "Add/Remove Programs..." control panel.

I haven't messed around in the registry yet...kinda hoping I wouldn't have
to....

Oh, and another detail to add--on the times when I startup and the mouse
doesn't work....it actually works at first while Windows XP is loading, then
I see the "Add Hardware" icon in my system tray. After it finishes, the
mouse won't work. I don't know what it's seeing for new hardware.
I then restart my computer and this time it WON'T show the "Add Hardware"
icon and the mouse works like normal.
