intermittent lost network connection after SP2

C

Claude

After successfully installing SP2, my network connection
(behind router) has become intermittent. It periodically,
after 2-3 minutes or seconds, becomes disengaged from the
network. A reboot, disable/enable network connection, or
simply waiting for a period of time will re-establish the
connection. What gives??? I deinstalled SP2 and so far
no lost network connection!? (although, I'll have to see
after a couple of hours or so).

I've been having the same problem, with XP pro, both before and after
SP2 upgrade. I tried both static IP and DHCP and get the same
intermittment disconnects either way. A repair of the the network
connection always fixes it, so I am fairly certain it is an XP problem
(I've used different cables, and different ports in the back of my
router and still get the issue - none of my win 98 boxes have this
issue, and I have this problem on both of my new xp pro machines)

I updated my driver software for ethernet, and have tried all the
"tricks" that have been posted here in the group, but no luck.

I've come to the conclusion that it's pre as well as post
SP2 too. It never used to be this bad. I think I can
still ping the machine. I think it's the ISP or internet
connection that's lost. I too am behind a Linksys router.
Hopefully some smart MS techie will step in here with as
solution.

It turns out that this may be due to the ISP, who
reported the everyone in my area of the city "will be
experiencing intermittent outages throughout the day as
[they] upgrade the cable service...". So...we'll see
tomorrow.

Mike,

one possible cause could be that you have 802.1X authentication
enabled in the IP settings, although you don't have any such
server in the network.

Please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxNetwork.htm.

I've been there, no luck. 802.1x not enabled. Again I don't think this
an ISP problem as my Win 98 machines have no issues. Also, this is
intermittent whether I use DHCP or static IP addresses.

Mike,

I'd do the repair procedures next, particularly IP stack repair
and Winsock repair. There's just too much adware around that
wedges itself into the Winsock and causes intermittent wireless
problems, among other things.

You'll find the procedures in the web site mentioned above.
