Interesting JPEG Viewing Issue

Currently, I am running XP Pro with Service Pack 2. My browser is IE
6.0.2900.2180.xpsp2_gdr.050301-1519CO.

Currently My JPG, JPEG and JPE are all associated with the Microsoft Picture
Manager. So naturally, when I double-click on a jpg file The MS Picture MGR
pops open and I can view my file.

However, there are times when I prefer to see what the image looks like in a
browser, so I would Right click the file, choose "Open With" and then choose
Internet Explorer. The files will not open in Explorer, nor will I see an
error message indicating what the problem is.

Has anyone have any thoughts on this for me?

Internet Explorer is a web browser. As such, it displays pages coded in
HTML. Your picture is not coded in HTML - it's a simple jpeg.

Hi John,
There is an internal listing of UnSafe Files in the registry under the
following key
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\UnsafeFiles\Include

Check if you have a listing here. (This seems the less likely cause as I
just tested it on my machine)

Another reason could be that your jpg files are not realy jpg files! (even
though they have a jpg extension). IE also checks the image file header to
validate that it is of a type that is safe.
This is the most likely cause as I just did the test. When a png file is
renamed with a jpg extension it will not load into IE and an image
placeholder is displayed. When a jp2 (jpeg 2000) is renamed with a jpg
extension it won't even load into IE!

Visit http://www.irfanview.com/ . It is a free image utility that will
detect the true file type and offer to convert it for you.
