Omigawd, they're going to put that crap into firmware.

What can they be thinking?

cheers,

Maybe they are thinking they can do the same thing Microsoft did when
they bought RAV and remade it into a superior product.

Just wondering ....
What can Intel gain from McAffee..... and what is the wisdom of such
deal?
Maybe if that deal will push through....PC users will switch to Apple
products or just go to Linux...

I doubt it. It is more like they will com up with embedded anti malware specifically for
mobile devices like smart phones.

"When we look several years out, almost every device in the home is
likely to be connected to the Internet. Intel clearly wants to
participate in that market," said Chris Hickey, an analyst with
Atlantic Equities. "By being able to differentiate with a security
offering, they may well have an edge over the competition."

This must be worth $7.7 billion to them.

It could be their way of pushing a techological change in their product
line. For instance, if the AV companies were reluctant to implement
their software support for Intel's proposed "hardware acceleration" for
AV scanners - Intel can now do as they please and be assured at least
one major AV will support it.
Maybe if that deal will push through....PC users will switch to Apple

That won't make any difference. I think that this is an architectural
shift in processor design and other processor manufacturers will likely
follow suit. Of course, I could be wrong and the whole idea is to add
bloat to EEPROM chips.

| I agree,m that's a likely scenario, but IMO they'll have to do some work
| to bring McAfee up to the needed level. Good luck to them.

In that area, I disagree.

"The current cybersecurity model isn't extensible across the proliferating
spectrum of devices - providing protection to a heterogeneous world of
connected devices requires a fundamentally new approach to security.
Frankly, the industry needed a paradigm shift - incremental improvements
simply couldn't bridge the opportunity gap. McAfee and Intel Corporation are
joining forces to tackle this next generation cybersecurity issue which
impacts everyone and anything connecting to the Internet"
