instant messaging on a local network?

Hello,

I'm looking for an instant messaging freeware that will do the
following:

* Work on a local network apart from the internet (so Yahoo IM isn't
going to work)

* Send text, pictures, and sound files (thus, WinPopUp.exe won't work)

* Be receivable whether the recipient is running Windows, Linux, or
another OS.
(This is beginning to sound like HTML or Java)

* Pop up "on top" so that the recipient knows there is a new message.

* Obviously, I'm talking about different programs for different
platforms. If possible, I'd like to avoid Java.

Any good ideas?

Thank you.

You need a "Jabber-ish" type of set-up and with that, you will need a
server. I am not an expert on this, but I do not think you will find
what you need in freeware. You may, but I am not overly optimistic.

Possible RealPopup - I know only this software as free.
But I remember that the realpopup have no file transfer ability.

We do the instant messenger for LAN with files transfer ability, live
contact list etc , but it's not freeware.

Actualy there are a number of free Jabber servers and clients.

See http://www.jabber.org for more info..

I did not know if Jabber was free, that is why I said you would need a
"Jabber-ish type" of client/server.

Thanx for the update.

I used to use RealPopup here with approx 25 users or so.

However, I'm always on the lookout for software that does things better
for a particular task that I'm doing.

For a replacement to RealPopup I found Tonic at www.r2.com.au

The main benefit was that you click on an avatar in your contact list to
send a message, rather than in RealPopup having to type the name.
Therefore making it that much more user friendly.

On their public beta page, the latest version supports file transfer
amongst other things, but I found it to crash when doing certain tasks
and settled on the currently stable version 1.0.480.

I doubt it will satisfy all the criteria you've specified, but it's the
best free, serverless LAN instant messenger I found.

Ah. It won't do that.
