You can only boot from the Windows XP after opening
your BIOS and setting the CD drive as the first bootable
device and the hard drive as the second bootable device.

You can also obtain floppy setup disks here:

How to obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310994

Note: Make sure you download the correct setup disks
according to the service pack level of Windows XP CD you own.

Please read the following:

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

| I have a system that for some reason will not boot the CD. Even though it is

| I think something is broken with it.
|
| I tried to use the method for installing Xp from dos prompt.
|
| eg
| Boot 98 floppy, This gives me access to CD rom.
| Go to cd rom and into \i386 directory. Type winnt.exe which copies the
| software on to the hard disk., Go to hard drive and type setup.

| But when it starts it gives me an error that this is not a licensed copy or

Thanks, I will try the boot disk road.

I have gone into the bios and made the CD the first bootable device but it
simply does not boot. This is why I think there must be something broken
with it. Other wise the cd rom works fine.

My BIOS setup for booting to CD ROM requires hitting " any key" while mesage
is displayed. If not, it will attempt to boot to HDD. Not the case?

Also, booting from 98 SU disk, after prompt displayed, change drive to "CD
Drive", type "setup" (w/o ""). I don't know why you would go to dir \I386.
Setup is in root dir.
