installing Windows XP

I am trying to install Xp. I am able to boot off of the cd and that all works
fine but when I get ready to format the drive it says that is cant find the
hard disk and terminate the installation. I know that's not accurate because
I am able to boot up in to the previous copy of windows and it works like a
charm. I even tried using 2 different disk and still the same problem. Can
you help me?

when you say clean install", do you mean me formatting the drive myself and
installing it fresh like that?

Hi

During the install - using Michael's article - you will be given the option
to delete (format) the partition on which XP is already installed. You will
then perform a 'Clean' install of XP. Everything will be deleted on the
hard disk/partition, so you will be starting from 'scratch' - all data files
will be erased

If your drive is a SATA drive you probably need to supply the driver
diskette. Early in the first phase of the installation you will see at the
bottom of the screen a message to press F6 to provide additional drivers.
You will only have a few seconds. The message is displayed while other
things are going on in the main area of the screen, so watch for it.
Without giving the installer the driver for your SATA hard disk controller,
Windows will never find your drive.

it's an ide drive.

It will allow me to boot into windows but when I am able to format the drive
during the installation, it tells me the drives are not there.

correction it is an SCSI drive. I guess what you just wrote will apply to the
SCSI drivers also right? I dont have the driver disk for it. I went to
Seagate's website and they said they dont have a such thing as drivers for
their hard drive. Do you have any suggestions?

I know how to do all Michael is suggesting on his website but the problem is
that when I get to the point of deleting the partition and installing windows
again, it stops and says that the hard drive can not be found. So my
installation is terminated. I have a SCSI Seagate. Do I need additional
drivers for it? If so where do I get them because Seagate says it does have
additional drivers.

I don't use SCSI drives, so I will defer to others, but the behavior is as
though the BIOS settings are not right. Go to the motherboard
manufacturer's website and find the support link and email their tech's for
the correct BIOS settings. Be prepared to provide some technical details on
the hardware.

Don't mean to but in, but I am trying to build a new computer and yes I have
a SATA drive and after hitting f6 the windows cd starts loading and then asks
for the floppy with the driver, which I got from Maxtor. I insert the disk I
then get the following, oh by the way I had just purchased the window xp home
edition with sp2 version 2002 which is OEM. The message I get is: file
txtsetup.oem caused error 4096 line 1742
d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c. Any words of advice?

Download the driver(s) from the Maxtor website and make a new floppy.
Maxtor may have made changes since SP2 was released. Or the original
diskette may be defective. The website should have instructions.

If the SCSI connectors are on your Mobo then that is the place to look for
drivers,
if it is an add-on card somewhere on the card it will say the
manufacturer....look on their website
