installing windows xp

J

Josh

I'd like to get Windows XP. I currently have Win 98 and am
therefore able to buy the upgrade edition of win XP.

However - if I buy the upgrade edition, does this mean I
will only be able to install win XP on a PC with win 98
installed on it?

The thing is, I want to completely reformat my HD and
start again but with windows XP - am I able to do this
still with an upgrade edition or do I need to shell outt
he cash for the 'full' version?

Hi Josh,

The upgrade version will only install XP from an existing Windows
installation.
If you want to format your drive you'll need to reinstall 98 then upgrade to
XP.

I believe this is incorrect Anthony. You can install a clean install of XP
on a formatted or unformatted HD.

You should boot from the Windows XP CD. Select the new or clean install
instead of the Upgrade of 98. Follow the instructions to delete the
previous OS/partition from the drive. This will totally remove your
previous operating system, installed programs and data on that partition so
make sure you back up any data you want before doing the install. You will
have to reinstall all programs after installing XP. You may be asked for
your original 98 CD as PROOF of a previous license for Windows.
