I reformatted using windows xp pro... the first time it was loading it
stopped half way and said i was missing root>\system32\hal.dll so I
restarted loading xp again and everything loaded good, however when my
computer is starting I am given a screen that asks which op syst i want to
run, they both are winxp pro, the first one is the good copy, the second is
the bad copy....how do I get rid of the second.... do I have to reformat
again??

Hi,

So what is your objective? Which one do you want to retain, and which do you
want to lose?

In addition, click start/run, type C:\boot.ini and click ok. From the
resulting notepad, click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a response to this
post and answer the above questions. Then start a new line and hit ctrl+v to
paste the contents of boot.ini so we can tell you how to fix it.

Hi Rick, Thanks for such simple directions. I would like to retain C: because
it has much more space. The F: has hardly any.

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

Hi,

Sorry, I had missed it. Go to the control panel/system/advanced tab, click
on startup and recovery settings. Click the edit button, remove the second
entry from the [operating systems] section, leaving only:

[boot loader]
timeout=20
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect

Then close saving the changes. You can delete the files on F that are part
of the unwanted system and reboot at your leisure.

Hi,

No, you don't have to start again. Click start/run, type msconfig
and
click
ok. Go to the boot.ini tab, click the button to 'check all boot
paths'.
It
should offer to remove the invalid one.

Hi,

You said you had an installation on C and F. Simply delete the system
folders that were created on F by the installation you are removing.
