Installing vista onto a partition - I'm a beginner

Hey everyone,

I'm about to upgrade (or not) to vista RC1 from XP and I have two questions
about what will happen to my data.

To avoid being misunderstood, this is a screenshot of partition magic's view
of my setup.

As you can see, I have windows in a 10 gb C:/, Music and documents on a
seperate partition (D:/) and Ubuntu (which I will remove) on the partition
next to it (5 gb).

So after removing ubuntu, how would I go about installing vista on my hard
disk?

the "EXTENDED partition is the only one large enough to install vista.

you probably should consider some upgrades before attempting vista.

20gb is a normal size for vista partition. it will not actually use all of it.
mine loaded with all normal applications uses 11gb after install.

it just needs a large chunk for installation purpose.

also remember if you install from booted DVD , vista will STEAL "C" drive designation.
you must install from within another OS to retain your drive lettering.

there is an UPGRADE advisor available from MS.

might download and run it to see.

If you're getting rid of Ubunto, repartition those to one partition and
install Vista there. Personally, I'd delete the extended partition and the
ubunto partitions, give more to that general partition that is filling up and
create a new partition of about 25G for a clean Vista install.

Just my opinion.
