Installing second hard drive

I have a secondary drive from my previous pc with data I want to put on my
new pc. The old system was XP Professional - the new system is Vista Home
Premium. I put the drive on the ide cable my dvd burner is on and set it to
cable select. I could see it in the device manager, but could not see it
under My Computer. I could not access it at all. I reset the drive to
master and the pc would not boot.

In Device Manager right click on the drive, select Properties, on the Volumes
tab click Populate, for each partition (if you have more than one) click the
Properties button and on the Security tab take ownership/give full permissions
to your account.

Put the second HD back to secondary. Then use Disk Management to be sure
that Vista can see it, probably as Disk 1. Don't repartition or reformat
it, of course, until you've retrieved the data from it. Note the drive
letter that is assigned to the partition(s) on this hard disk, and change
the letter, if you like. It's a good idea to assign a "volume label", too,
because drive letters are not permanently assigned and can get changed,
sometimes unexpectedly. Then Computer (Vista has eliminated the "My" from
WinXP's My Computer, My Pictures, etc.) should be able to list it.

There are several ways to find Disk Management. One way is to right-click
on Computer, then click Manage | Disk Management (under Storage). This is
the utility we've used since Windows 2000 to manage hard drives, plus
optical drives, USB thumb drives, and just about any other device that can
be assigned a "drive" letter.
