Installing Printers

I have never seen this before but when I go to install printers on an XP pro
laptop it takes me all the way to the last finish prompt then presents this
error:
"Unable to Install Printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly,
or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server. For more
information, Click Help."
It does not matter if I install the printer using the LPT1 port of a TCP/IP
port. It is virus clean. I have stopped the spooler and looked for any jobs
out there in C:\windows\spool\printers. Nothing.
Any Ideas?
Is there a way to reload the spooler system to possible correct the issue?
The same printer works fine for other computers on the network.

How many other PCs are connecting to the same printer and what is the
operating system of the PC that has the printer installed locally?

There are probably 10 or more other computers able to print with no issues
to that printer. Other computers are able to install the printer without any
issues. The printer is not attached to a PC locally. It has a jetdirect
card installed. Does that help?

Just a question on this subject: on a tcp/ip installed printer , is it
better to install the tcp/ip port & printer on all computers using that
printer . Or just on a main computer and then share the printer from the
main machine

Thanks Dennis

Typically it is better to setup the TCP/IP printer on a server and then set
everyone else up to print through that server. That way you have better
control over document management and troubleshooting. If it is a really
small network with no server then installing it on each computer is the best
solution.
