Installing Office 2000 x on Preloaded XP SP2

S

shane lieberg

Ok, I have purchased 5 new pc systems, and they have arrived with
Windows XP SP2 "preloaded".. and i am trying to install Office 2000..

It fails everytime with a windows file protection message..

Steps i have tried..
0. Searched news group and KB for answer. found MS KB 871220
tried it and it does "NOT" solve the problem..
1. Install new Office 2000 pro sp3
2. Install same on second system, and 3rd system
3. Install older Office 2000 pro sp2 cd.
4. Install older Office 2000 premium cd.
5. Install older Office 2000 SB cd.

All fail at the same point in the same way on all the systems..

Found Windows XP SP2 in the add/remove menu. and tried to remove
it and then install the office.. XP SP2 removed succesfully. reboot and
install
New Office 2000 pro SP3, and success.. it works.. this seems to strongly
suggest
Windows XP SP2 is at fult and this is not a long term solution i have found,
as all new system will be coming with Windows XP SP2

Windows XP SP2 support Live/chat have was there hads of this and say it not
there issue.. Ticket # SRX040930607957

I hope the community can help with this..

This is interesting.

I deploy Office 2000 SP1 onto XP SP2 boxes and then upgrade to Office 2000
SP3 with a script with no difficulty. I'm not saying there's not an issue,
but I haven't heard anything.

Have you tried the new "Chat to a Service Pack 2 Engineer online" option at
support.microsoft.com? Alternatively, your PC vendor should be able to
provide support, in case nobody else here knows the answer to your problem.

And i also have a call into my vendor, but i think you won't see this
problem until some one goes out and buys XP sp2 of the shelf and
loads it on a new system, and then tries to load office 2000..
or other vendors slipstream there install to XP SP2..

MY REPLY

Step 1: This would imply that I have successfully installed
Office and now need to use the repair utility.
(I CAN NOT INSTALL OFFICE 2000 ON A NEW INSTALLATION OF XP SP2)

Step 2: I am installing Office 2000 full version, although the install will
not
complete. I have run the clean up tool as requested, but office is not
listed, I have deleted the temp folder and Office will still "NOT" install.

Steps to reproduce my problem.
1. Create a splipstream install cd of Windows XP Sp2.
2. Install windows Xp Sp2 Pro Full Version on to a PC.
3. Install any drivers needed.
4. Complete all windows updates.
5. Begin new install of Office 2000 "Any Version"

Or

Steps to reproduce my problem.
1. Use a Store bought copy of Windows Xp Sp1 Pro Full Version
2. Install Windows Xp Sp1 Pro Full Version on to a PC.
3. Install Any drivers needed.
4. Install Windows Xp Sp2 Onto PC.
5. Complete all windows updates.
6. Begin new install of Office 2000 "Any Version"

Both will fail, however using the second method I can uninstall
Windows XP Sp2, and i am then able to install Office 2000 "Any Version"

This strongly suggests that this is a service pack 2 issue, however as you
can
note. SRX040930607957 was created by a SP2 help desk, and then transfered
to your deptment

Your first method of reproduction is not correct, sa it's exactly what I do
to install workstations, albeit using the Small Business Edition of Office
2000.

However, if other versions of Office were regularly exhibiting the problem
you're having, I'm sure we all would have heard about it.

Looks like you've already been on to PSS. They should give you free support
if it's truly an SP2 issue.

I also ran into this problem today. I was rebuilding a Compaq
Presario 2500 laptop after a user destroyed it. I imaged back onto it
the factory install image, whiped out some of the nonsense
applications that come with the factory install, and then installed
SP2. After that I started to install some other applications the user
needed, and I ran into the same problem with our slipstreamed Office
2000 SR1 SP3 install: Windows File Protection error asking for the
Windows XP SP2 CD. I had to uninstall SP2, install Office 2000, then
reinstall SP2 to get it to work. What a pain!

I'm really in trouble when we start ordering PCs with XP SP2 already
on them. Although, perhaps this is a good thing... it will force the
company to upgrade to Office 2003. ;-)
