Installing New Mobo in Existing System Issue

Chris P.

I have a ASUS P4P800 Deluxe Motherboard that I want to
install on my current system. I want to know what I
should do before I install it. I know the hard-drives
wont be a problem since I have taken them to other
systems with different motherboards and they run fine. I
know when you install a operating system it also installs
drivers for your motherboard and it's components that are
displayed in the "SYSTEM DEVICES" under Device Manager. I
know this probably will create a conflict since they are
the wrong drivers for the wrong motherboard once I
install the new one. What do you recommend I do. I am
using Windows XP Home edition on the system I will be
putting the new motherboard and I will be putting my old
motherboard in my home server i setup which is running
Windows 2000 server and Windows ME.

I appreciate all your help and thanks in advance.

Hello Chris...

Just installed the same MB into my case a week ago. Hope all goes better
for you than it did for me!

First of all was going from an Epox board with AMD CPU and VIA chipset to
this board. Secondly my system was on a RAID array (XP Pro) that used a
High Point controller.

To make a very long (and frustrating) story short it was necessary to
re-install XP as the VIA RAID controller on the P4P800 couldn't see the High
Point created array, and reloading an image once I had the VIA controller
setup also failed.

Trying the do a "maintenance reinstallation" also failed. Fortunately all
of my important information had been backed up (I do this regularly) so it
was only the matter of XP OS all the patches and all the apps.

Hoping your luck is better!

BTW... the AMI BIOS on the P4P800 sucks!

Usually a Repair Install works but not always, I changed the m/b
from an older Socket 7 to a Socket A type. It didn`t work. Had to do a
clean install.
Look on the XP Cd in Support\Tools for Deploy.cab and extract the
files to your hard disk. Run Sysprep.exe and click OK, this will
prepare your hard disk which will remove some of the system specific
drivers to allow you to use it on other systems or in your case your
m/b.
Alternatively, you need to uninstall as many system devices manually
from Device Manager and then shutdown and install new m/b and restart.
