Installing Microsoft IntelliType Pro/IntelliPoint 6.3 Setup

I recently purchased the above which comprises a wireless keyboard and mouse.
When I go to install it I get the following message:
"Setup must close because an error occured. Verify that your computer
meets the system requirements on the product packaging. Restart your
computer and try running set up again. If this error happens again, see Help
for Customer Support Options. (error Code 1603)"
I have done all the above without success. I have cleaned both CD.DVD
drives. I have loaded rhe CD on my laptop and it works there so I know the
CD is OK. My PC meets the requiements. I have Vista Home Premium Upgarde
from XP. I am administrator. Under Cusomer Help I find very little Info on
error 1603 other than for games. I am not a computer geek so am reluctant to
go 'messing' with csconfig sys. Can you help?

You haven't stated the actual model of keyboard or mouse, but have you
checked to see if you actually need the software? Most wireless
keyboard/mouse combos will work fine with the built in Windows drivers.
Especially the keyboard. Sometimes you might need IntelliPoint if you have
more than three mouse buttons and need the advanced functionality that this
software brings, but I for one have never felt the need to install
IntelliType.

Which wireless keyboard and mouse? Microsoft sells dozens of them, most
with confusingly similar names. :>( I know, because I've bought several
different sets and had to be sure to use exactly the right name for each of
them. And, sadly, the Intelli* drivers don't even show my older set when
asking me to choose.

I have the Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000, which I bought from the
Microsoft Company Store a couple of years ago. But the mouse died and
Microsoft replace it under warranty. The replacement is the Microsoft
Wireless Laser Mouse 6000 v2.0! This version 2.0 uses a different wireless
technology (2.4 GHz) from the original (RF ? - the documentation doesn't
say). So I have to keep two transceivers plugged into two USB ports, one
for the keyboard and one for the mouse.

My tale of woe is simply to illustrate that "a wireless keyboard and mouse"
is not enough of a description for us to give a definitive answer. All we
can give is "generic" advice.

One bit of generic advice is to visit the driver website on the Internet:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK
The CD in your package may be several months old, even if you bought it just
yesterday.

Another generic tip is that OS "upgrades" often bring along unwanted
baggage, including drivers that almost-but-not-quite work with the newer
Windows. It might help if you use Device Manager to uninstall your mouse
and keyboard completely, shut down, power down - and then unplug your mouse
and keyboard. Power on and try to boot - it should fail because there's no
keyboard. Power down again and plug in your mouse and keyboard. (This is a
bit of overkill; probably all you really need do is unplug the hardware and
plug it in again after a minute or so.) Power up again and let Vista detect
your hardware and install its built-in drivers. If these drivers don't
satisfy you, then go back to Device Manager and click Update drivers and let
it Search the Internet for updates.

Thanks for the advice. I am fairly new to communities. The description on
the box is 'MS Wireless Media desktpo 1000' The Keyboard is 'MS Wireless
Keyboard 1000' the mouse is 'MS Wireless Optical Mouse 2000' They both came
in 1 package. I assume that I need to istall the software as I don't have
wireless keyboard & mouse at present. The keyboard I'm using is the original
DELL and it is giving a lot of trouble with sticky keys and false errors e.g
as I typed 'sticky' it returned to the beginning of this message and inserted
the last 3 letters 'cky'.

I had repeated problems with installing the latest 6.3 mouse software.
I went back to version 6.1 and it worked. You can still find it at the
MS site. Worth a shot.

There are other ways to tell, but my favorite is just one two-fingered
keystroke:
<Win>+<Break>

That is, hold the <Win> key (the Windows logo key, which has gone through
several name changes, including "Start", but always does the same thing
since it first appeared on the "Natural" keyboard well over a decade ago)
like a Shift key while you press the <Pause/Break> key, in the upper right
on most keyboards. (If your keyboard has that <F-Lock> key this might not
work the first try; toggle that key and try again.) This explanation is
long, but the keystroke is near-instantaneous. ;<) And it works for all
Windows versions since at least Win95.

The System Properties window should pop up on your screen and will say,
right about the middle, "System type: 64-bit Operating System".

I installed that twice on new Vista builds and had install related
issues. The install never quite completed... kept popping up the end
of the install process every time I'd try to use the software.

Going back to the 6.1 release solved the issues.
